The lives of Schumann and Brahms were intertwined in more than just musical and professional ways. Both composers were seeking their comfort zone within the symphonic idiom through lengthy processes of abandoned drafts and recycled materials. As a result each of them wrote four symphonies which were composed over decades and often published out of chronological order. Brahms wrote his Tragic Overture as a remedy for unleashing his penned up depression. In composing the Variations on a Theme by Haydn, which was in reality not by Haydn but the melody of St. Anthony Chorale, Brahms honed his skills as a maturing symphonist and used it a decoy for putting off further the completion of his First Symphony. Schumann dedicated the piano reduction of his originally single-movement symphony to Clara as her 22nd birthday present. It underwent years of revision and was published later as his Fourth Symphony. The controversial contrast between the first version of this symphony and its final incarnation provides fascinating material for the interpretation and scholarship of Schumann, but also defines Schumann as an innovative pioneer along his symphonic journey.
